What Is a Certificate of Analysis and Why Does It Matter?

A Certificate of Analysis (COA) is a document issued by an independent, accredited laboratory that verifies the identity, purity, and composition of a compound. A COA from an ISO-accredited lab means the testing facility has been independently audited to confirm its methods and results meet international standards.

In the research chemical supply industry, COAs are the primary mechanism of quality accountability. The majority of vendors do not publish third-party COAs. We post ours publicly because we believe if you cannot verify what you are buying, you should not be buying it.

How to Read a COA

Identity TestConfirms the compound is what it is labeled as (HPLC, MS)
Purity (%)Percentage of target compound vs. impurities. Higher is better. We require >98%.
Water ContentMeasured by Karl Fischer titration. Low water content = better stability
Residual SolventsTests for manufacturing solvents that should not be present in the final product
Heavy MetalsConfirms absence of lead, mercury, arsenic, cadmium
Lab AccreditationISO/IEC 17025 is the international standard for testing laboratory competence
